Northern Lightning, a designer lighting brand, was founded in 2005 in Oslo by Ove Rogne. Earlier this year, the brand changed its name to Northern and expanded its range to include Scandinavian furniture and accessories, but their most famous products are still their lighting fixtures. These combine beauty, functionality, natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. The lamps are inspired by the ever-changing Nordic light and Norwegian nature.
The brand offers lamps made of metal, glass or, unusually, porcelain. Northern's iconic Acorn pendant lamp
The Acorn pendant lamp is one of Northern's most famous fixtures. Designed by Norwegian designer Atle Tveit and inspired by autumnal Norwegian nature, the shape of the lamp resembles an acorn cap. The lamp combines natural elements with functionality.
A friend named Buddy
Ove Rogne supports the younger generation of designers and the brand holds an annual Northern Lighting Student Design Award competition for young talent. The practical Buddy table lamp with pencil holder is an example of this. The Buddy series also includes a wall version of this lamp.
The Birdy series
The Northern range also includes iconic pieces from the 1950s by the famous Norwegian designer Birger Dahl. These include the Dokka and Dahl collections, as well as the extensive Birdy collection of table, floor and wall lamps. This was created by Birger Dahl as early as 1952. Two years later, the lamps won a highly acclaimed gold medal at the Milan Triennale. The Northern brand relaunched the production of these iconic lamps in 2013.
Elegant Oslo floor lamps
The Oslo Woodfloor lamps were designed by Ove Rogne in 2005 and have been bestsellers in Norway for more than 10 years. The design, consisting of three metal legs, is complemented by a fabric shade that lets in soft light. The lamp is meant to evoke the soft night light that shines through the branches of the trees in Oslo in winter.
Over Me ceiling and wall lights
Over Me is a collection of ceiling and wall lights that is certified for use in wet areas, so you can safely place them in the bathroom. The lights are made up of a metal frame and a milky white glass disc that gives off an even light to its surroundings.
