We called the position of Scandinavian design that is most closely based on nature embrace the nature. Take a look at what defines this tone and the collections that work most with it. And get to know 2 extraordinary stories of designers using natural materials.

Organic shapes, earthiness, natural colours

Our selection embrace the nature is defined by organic shapes, combinations of neutral and earthy colours and unmistakably natural materials such as wood, terracotta, linen and more. Scandinavians love Nordic nature, which is why they surround themselves with it in their homes.

Products made from natural materials often have slight variations due to handcrafting, which only confirm authenticity and are in turn highly sought after. These can be knots in the fabric, different shades of rattan wands, different wood grain in multiple pieces of the same product, and so on.

Burl tables with an exceptional pattern

At first glance, the burl wood tables from Ferm Living are natural gems. This is recognisable at first sight by its extraordinary patterning. Burl or burl wood is obtained from irregular growths (tumours) on tree trunks, branches or root growths. These deformed formations contain overgrown particles, twigs, and bark and are very rare because they usually only form in response to stress, damage, or other disturbance to the growth of the tree in question.

Plant chairs? Mat by Normann Copenhagen

Design products from Scandinavian brands are made in accordance with nature and sustainability, the vast majority of them do not lack the necessary certifications that address ecology and social responsibility in production.

One example of this is the Mat range of modern shell chairs from Normann Copenhagen, a brand that, through years of research and development, has created a product that has a lower environmental impact. The shell of the Mat chair is innovatively made from hemp and eelgrass. Not only do these materials make the product more responsible, but hemp and seaweed play a vital role in the design, highlighting the natural beauty and tangibility of the materials.

The entire Mat chair collection is designed for a fully circular life cycle. The chairs can be disassembled and parts can be further recycled and used in new products.
