Akari table lamps are derived from the light sculptures created in the 1950s by Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. The word “akari” means both light and lightness in Japanese, and this dual meaning forms the foundation of the table lamp design. Noguchi transformed a technical source of illumination into a soft, almost ethereal object that is timeless and fits effortlessly into an interior.
Each lamp is handcrafted in the traditional Ozeki workshop in Gifu, Japan. The structure consists of bamboo ribs stretched over original wooden moulds, which are then covered with washi paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree. The result is a lightweight, collapsible shade with a delicate texture that diffuses a soft, warm glow. The construction is complemented by airy metal legs. The light source is an LED bulb with an E27 fitting, providing pleasant illumination that enhances the intimate atmosphere of a space.
Akari table lamps are perfectly suited to bedside tables, sideboards, desks and reading corners. Each piece is marked with a stylised sun and moon logo, symbolising authenticity and fidelity to Noguchi’s original design.
