Philippe Starck

France

Philippe Starck (born 1949) is a French designer and architect. He designed President Mitterrand's private apartments at the Élysée Palace as well as cafés and hotels in Paris and New York, and he creates furniture, lighting and household objects. He champions democratic design: a well-designed object should be available to as many people as possible.

Philippe Starck was born in Paris in 1949, the son of the aeronautical engineer André Starck. He studied at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris. He made his name in the 1980s: in 1983 he designed President François Mitterrand's private apartments at the Élysée Palace, a year later the Café Costes in Paris and in 1988 the Royalton Hotel in New York.

Starck speaks of democratic design. In his view, a well-designed object should be made in large series and at a price that as many people as possible can afford.

He has worked with the Italian brand Flos since 1988. At DesignVille you will find his Bon Jour table lamp, both with a cable and as the portable Bon Jour Unplugged. Both use Edge Lighting technology to spread the light evenly, and a dimmer lets you set the brightness. Launched in 2015, Bon Jour Unplugged was the first portable battery lamp from Flos. It charges via USB-C or on a Qi wireless charger, gives up to six hours of light and has three brightness levels, so you can carry it from the desk to the terrace.
