Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) was one of the leading Finnish designers of the last century.

During his career, Tapiovaara designed a great deal of furniture: during the war also for the Finnish army, and after the war for hotels, companies and public spaces. A great inspiration for him was Alvar Aalto, co-founder of Artek, which today makes Tapiovaara's furniture, including the Mademoiselle chair.
